Imagine that you and eleven of your closest friends grab some libations and steaks, and barbeque them while cruising Newport harbor–all for about $10 per hour per person.
Newport Pontoons offers this great local getaway right there on Coast Highway. It’s a unique business launched just over a year ago, and one more than worth getting to know.
For many years, I have been recommending a book called “The Blue Ocean Strategy,” which guides business owners and entrepreneurs through the process of creating their own “Blue Ocean,” which means one with little or no competition. Why struggle in the “Red Ocean” where the competition devours itself? How appropriate that the comparison actually involves the ocean as well?
Newport Pontoons owners Garrison and Brandon Williams found a demand for a market that did not even exist.
“It was fueled (no pun intended) because tooling around the harbor in a motorboat was just too darn expensive,” shared Garrison during a recent interview. He realized there was a need for affordable ways to enjoy the water at a fair price and a leisurely pace. This is not your father’s or grandfather’s version of a pontoon, with lounge chairs floating on pieces of woods.
Newport Pontoons made a splash at the Lido Boat Show as pontoon boats had never been prevalent before in those “upper end” markets.
They can do speeds up to 43 knots, so imagine skiing behind one of them with a handful of friends and room to spare.
The Avalon boats they rent and sell are made in Michigan and tested on the Great Lakes for stability. They’ve also been travel-tested thousands of miles along the Eastern seaboard.
Most people think of pontoons for lakes (such as Lake Arrowhead), and not for salt water, but these boats are stable enough to cruise to Catalina in more comfort that you are used to–and they’re virtually unsinkable.
In addition to renting the boats, Newport Pontoons offers more than 70 different models for sale. While smaller electric boat have seemingly cornered the market in Newport Beach, throughout the rest of the U.S., pontoon boats dominate with up to 70% of all boat sales.
The pontoon boats can be outfitted with any luxury than you would find in other boating options. Newport Pontoons has a large selection and inventory, and they control seven slips and boats. They also offer a timeshare rental program that allows owners to rent their boats, generate income, and still use it when they want.

Is your business unique? Do you command your own “Blue Ocean?” There are more than 20,000 businesses that are licensed in Newport Beach. We’re looking for those hidden gems: unique stores or people that everyone really should know about.

It’s often easy to overlook fun activities when they’re in your own backyard, so we made time recently to check off two things on our “To Do” list: a “dock and dine” boat excursion on a pontoon boat, and a guided art walk through Pelican Hill Resort. Both are perfect summertime excursions for a group of friends, out-of-town visitors, or locals who need a reminder as to why we love living here.
Pontoon Boat Ride
We’ve got a beautiful harbor, and what better way to enjoy it than cruising in an electric boat while sipping champagne and nibbling cuisine from local waterfront restaurants.
With that concept in mind, Catherine and I invited a handful of fellow foodies to a “dock and dine” cruise. We deliberated on boat rentals, and chose Newport Pontoons because the boats can hold up to a dozen people with plenty of room to stand and walk around, and because we’ve never piloted a pontoon boat.
Our foodie group met at Newport Pontoons at 6:30 pm on a balmy Wednesday evening, and were escorted to a beautiful boat that had recently been added to the rental fleet. It boasted a wet bar, comfortable seating, cup holders, stereo, and more amenities than we expected to find on a rental boat.
We loaded our beverages (champagne, wine and water) and, after being given a few instructions on boating basics, we shoved off (with me at the helm) and headed to our first of three restaurants: DivBar.
Easily accessible by boat, DivBar has a dockside valet to assist boaters in maneuvering and disembarking.
We’ve had dinner at DivBar, but dining on their fabulous white pizza, duck fat fries, firecracker shrimp and Thai chicken salad while on the water added a different dimension to the cuisine.
Our passengers passed around plates of food, and we continued our journey to our second of three restaurants stops: SOL Cocina, which has a dock and dine program featuring a variety of their notable south-of-the-border dishes.
Our captain (me) took a wrong turn and had to double back, so we were later than expected arriving at SOL. The restaurant was more than accommodating and soon we were feasting on tacos vampiros, chips and salsa, and other signature SOL dishes.
“My favorite was the platter with different proteins and topping so you could build your own taco,” said Catherine. “Another great feature about their boat side service is their margaritas to-go, which come in a legal sealed bottle that you can mix it yourself on your boat.”
By now it was dark, but the harbor is rimmed with lights from waterfront homes, and the boat has interior and exterior lights, so we had no problem getting to our final destination: Harborside Restaurant at the Balboa Pavilion.
Harborside has docks where boaters can tie up and dine inside the restaurant, but they accommodated our food-to-go request and brought out platters of popular bar items including Ahi nachos, coconut crusted shrimp, lettuce wraps, and crab and avocado wantons.
We reluctantly headed back to Newport Pontoons, our stomachs full and our spirits high.
Once back on dry land, everyone agreed that the pontoon boat was the perfect vessel for a dining cruise, and that we’d all had a perfectly wonderful and relaxing evening.
We also agreed that next time, we’d limit ourselves to one restaurant per excursion, because it takes longer that you think to cruise from one end of the harbor to the other.
Newport Pontoons offers several different boat rental options for $125-$150 per hour, with a two hour minimum–more expensive than renting other smaller boats, but well worth it.

As Newport Beach’s Christmas Card to the world, the boat parade will set the harbor ablaze for five consecutive nights, beginning Wednesday, December 18 and ending Sunday, December 22, 2013. The parade starts off Bay Island at 6:30 pm and finishes at the same site at approximately 9:00 pm each evening.
Beautiful multi-million dollar yachts, kayaks, canoes and other small boats will light up the harbor as a dazzling array of holiday lights and music fill the air at the Christmas Boat Parade. Many of the boats will be richly decorated with animated Christmas scenes accompanied by music and costumed carolers. Some boat owners in the past have spent over $50,000 to decorate their vessels for the event. The Christmas floats will wind their way some 14 miles around the harbor to give viewers in restaurants, yacht clubs, on public beaches, and in private homes an incredible sight that has delighted millions of people for a century.
The Christmas Boat Parade, which has been hailed as “one of the top ten holiday happenings in the nation” by the New York Times, is truly a magical holiday tradition for all ages. The parade continues to be a premier event during the holiday season in Southern California that brings joy and happiness to all that view it.
2013 Parade Route
Ring of Lights
Serving as the backdrop for the hundreds of lighted boats in the parade is the annual “Ring of Lights” contest, hosted by the Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce.
Beautifully decorated bayside homes and businesses surrounding the harbor go “all out” with their own holiday spirit, featuring everything from roof-top animated scenes to dancing Christmas trees. With its own judged categories and prizes awarded, the “Ring of Lights” has become as celebrated as the boat parade itself.
On the opening night of the parade on Wednesday, December 18 at approximately 6:20 pm, a special opening fireworks display will take place next to the Balboa Pier to kick off the parade.
Then, on the final night of the parade, Sunday, December 22, a special fireworks display will close out the parade. Beginning at approximately 9:00 pm, the fireworks will be visible from all around the harbor, being launched from the Balboa Pier.
Special thanks to Ruby’s Balboa Pier for closing early to allow for the final night fireworks show and other community supporters for helping underwrite the display.
